Blade construction: Shinogi-zukuri, Iori-mune, Machiokuri the blade is shortened on about 3-sun, approximately 9cm. Due to new preferences in swordmanship, the blade tapes strongly, have a shallow Sori and end in a medium Chu-kissaki, which is assumed thrusts rather than for cuts as blade geometry that appeared during kanbun-Enpo era (1661-80).(click HERE for higher resolution image of the entire blade)
Forging(Hada): Forging is fine Itame-hada and Shinogi-ji shows intense Masame indication. The entire Hiraji surface is covered in intense Ji-nie particles that sparks extremely bright and clear.
Temper(Hamon): Hamon is rather stronger side sparkling Nie hard metal granules base, long^footed tassel-shaped Choji with indication of slanting feet in different angles toward the cutting edge. In the interior of temper, there appears foggy Nioi crystalline area and delicate activity short lines of bright Sunagashi.
Temper of tip(Boshi): Boshi forms a Gunome below Yokote, then straight Suguha along curved Kissaki large circle turns back.
Tang(Nakago): Nakago heel is shortened Suriage, the blade is Mahciokuri shortened on about 3-sun (9cm). Three peg retaining holes. Greatly slanting left filemarks and upper area is Horizontal Kiri marks.
The inscription signature is located on the Shinogi-ji side, that stars with the title of Mutsdu-no-kami 陸奥守, name of clan Fujiwara 藤原 then a upper part name of smith TOSHI 歳 and NAGA 長 is amputated at the heel.

A smith TOSHINAGA 歳長 with Mutsu-no-kami title 陸奥守 was born in Awa (now Awajishima island), real name Futamura Yosaemon 二村弥左衛門. He went up to the capital Kyoto together as 3 brothers with his elder brother Yamashiro-no-kami TOSHINAGA 山城守歳長 and younger brother Musashi-no-kami TOSHINAGA 武蔵守歳長. They lived in Ichijo-Horikawa in Kyoto to catch up the most updated artistic talent to learn under Kunihiro 国広 school.
He grew eminent was entrusted by Toudo 藤堂家 clan in Ise province as an official sword smith and moved to his atelier to city of Ise.
His workmanship usually follows Yamashiro tradition of straight Suguha whereas flamboyant large Gunome or tassel-Choji like this example to meet with increasing demand from brave Samurai class.
This katana, originally measured as long as 2-shaku 5-sun (approx75.5cm) in cutting edge and was shortened in later generations to expect fast draw swordsmanship.
